Foundation Day for Mesa West Rotary
The Rotary Foundation will be the topic of our program at our February 21 meeting.  Chuck Flint will be honoring several Mesa West Rotarians and family members with Paul Harris Fellowship recognition.

A special guest at the meeting will be Beth Garrow who is the Major Gifts and Endowments Officer for Rotary Zone 26.  John Pennypacker has offered to arrange a private meeting with Beth for any member who is interested in learning more about various options available to make legacy gifts to The Rotary Foundation.  CLICK HERE to e-mail John if you want to take advantage of this opportunity to gain some very valuable estate planning information.
Highlights of Valentine's Day at Mesa West Rotary
In opening the Valentine's Day meeting, President Chris Krueger offered the invocation, and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Darl Andersen.  Lola McClane served as greeter, welcoming members and guests as they arrived for the meeting.

The agenda for the day was reversed with the Chamber Singers - the top level choir from Arizona School for the Arts providing a beautiful a cappella performance.  The Singers were led by their instructor, Dana Bender. The madrigal pieces performed were difficult, and were sung in foreign languages, which were articulated perfectly.  The students were masterful in their apparent discipline and performance skills.  Rotarians and guests learned that Arizona School for the Arts was one of the earliest charter schools in Arizona.  They offer 2-3 hours each school day of specialized arts classes in the areas of music, theatre, and dance.

During the Q&A portion of the program the audience learned that to be admitted to Arizona School for the Arts music program, students have to audition.  Noting that a pitch pipe was not used, one of the Singers took responsibility for being the one who provided that service as she has "perfect pitch."   An example of the creative community that the school produces, was a young man who explained about a small performance group he and a few other students had formed called the Mixtones.  One of the pieces they created and perform is a Hip Hop Medley.

Students at the school have a unique requirement to do a formal oral presentation each semester.  They put a lot of time into preparing the material and their presentation skills.  This results in the school producing very self confident graduates who are poised and ready to meet and succeed in college and their future occupational endeavors.

Guests
Warren Williamson introduced his wife, Son Hee.  Kaye Andersen was Darl's guest.  Alex Hopkins introduced Julie Matthew, who was also form Seattle.  Jack Rosenberg introduced his wife, Cindy.  Thomas and Pat Melton were both visiting from Farmington, Maine.  Donna Goetzenberger introduced her friend Teresa Lucas.  Teresa's father is a Rotarian in Texas.  Her daughter is an outbound Rotary Exchange Student in Belgium this year.  She is currently hosting an inbound student.  She went with the YE group that went to Havasu Falls this year, and will be taking students to Washington next week.  Dick Myren introduced his wife, Sandy.  Jeanie Morgan introduced the guests at her table:  PDG Don Kelley from Tempe South and Rob Foster from Tempe Kyrene.  Lucinda General introduced Lola McClane for the last time as a guest.  Even though she is a member of Mesa West, Dan Coons introduced his wife, Colleen.  Don LaBarge introduced his wife, Chris, and Bob Zarline introduced his guest, Delores Albagano visiting from New York.

Drawings
After three failed attempts the $5 potential winnings in the attendance drawing will roll over to the February 21 meeting.  Chuck Flint announced that the weekly raffle winnings would be $55, and if the lucky ticket holder were to draw the ace of clubs, they would win $497.  Chris Krueger's ticket was drawn, but after she masterfully shuffled the remaining cards in the deck, she was disappointed that she drew the five of clubs.

Happy Bucks
Donna Goetzenberger was happy to have visited the Prescott Sunup Rotary February 13 with her daughter to make a Youth Exchange presentation.  Dick Myren contributed his Rod Daniels dollar plus another dollar thankful for his lovely valentine, Sandy.  Colleen Coons contributed indicating she would have gladly contributed more if Dan had given her more.  Bob Zarling was happy to be leaving Friday morning early for Caborca, Mexico for a Rotary-organized polio immunization trip.  He also announced that there were some last minute cancellations making it possible for other Mesa West Rotarians to participate if they had the time available.  Donna Goetzenberger presented Valentine flowers to several of the women in the club who had mentored and supported her since she joined Rotary.  Pam thanked Donna for the flowers and for all she does supporting Youth Exchange in our District.  Lucinda General also thanked Donna and announced that forty years ago on Valentines Day she was nine months pregnant.  Her son was born February 15, 1979.

Announcements
  • Chris Krueger will be going on the Caborca Polio Immunization Trip
  • Bob Zarling explained that the Immunization Day is a cooperative effort with the Mexican government during Mexican Health Week.  Drops will be given by the Rotary volunteers, but when injections are necessary they will be administered by a government nurse.
  • Mesa West Rotary is involved with a microcredit operation in Hermosillo, Mexico.  An informational trip is planned March 7-9.  Any member wishing to go on the trip should contact Chris.  They will leave at 6:45 AM on March 7, spend the day traveling.  The group will have dinner with a Rotary Club in Hermosillo.  Friday, March 8, the group will visit borrowers who have benefitted from the program.  Very early Saturday morning, the group will head back to Arizona.  The microcredit borrowers are mostly women.  The funds borrowed are used to start their own business.  The default rate on the loans is miniscule.  The loans are short term, and as they are repaid, the money is used again to help another borrower.
  • It was announced that as Westwood High School Interact President Shakima Fagan and her mother are refugees from the British Virgin Islands, complications have made it impossible for her to attend a model UN in Thailand.  She has nominated another student to attend in her place, but there is a $600 funding deficit.  Within minutes, a few Mesa West members pledged funds to cover that deficit.
Closing the meeting, President Chris expressed how thankful she is to be leading such a wonderful club.

Former YE Student Wants to Visit Host Club
Thirty-three years ago, Omar Mota was living in Mesa, and attending Mesa High School as a Rotary Youth Exchange student.  He would very much like to visit his host club and thank them for their sponsorship of this opportunity.  He graduated from Mesa High School in 1986.  Omar lived with his own uncle during his exchange.  He contacted Mesa West Rotary through our Facebook page hoping that if we were not his host club, we could help him reconnect with the club that actually did sponsor his exchange.

Omar was born in Guaymas, Mexico.  Today, he is an engineer, working for HP in Guadalajara, Mexico.  He is shown in the more recent photo with his 24-year-old daughter and his beautiful wife.

One clue that might help determine the correct host club in Mesa, is that during his exchange, Omar would receive calls periodically inviting him to attend meetings of his host club.  The Rotarian who called him was a naturalized US citizen, originally from Argentina.  Many current members of Rotary Clubs in Mesa were not Rotarians in 1985-86 when Omar was in our community, but it is hoped that by networking with those who were, we will be able to come up with some fun facts to share with Omar.  He's been told that he will be a welcome guest at Mesa West Rotary when he is in our area.

One additional way that we could help Omar is to connect him with Rotarians in Guadalajara.  He is not currently a Rotarian, but has an interest in possibly joining a Rotary Club in Guadalajara.  Any and all information that might help Omar reconnect or to become a Rotarian would be welcome, CLICK HERE to send it to Jeanie Morgan.
Sponsorship Campaign Tips
WHY A SPONSOR PROGRAM?
  • Donors appreciate that all their donation will be used for good rather than support event costs.
  • Opportunity for both private and business donors to support our causes.
  • Past and potential members can support what we do even though they don't currently have time to participate as members.
  • MOST OF THESE DONORS WILL SUPPORT THE SAME CHARITIES EACH YEAR IF/WHEN ASKED.
  • One successful sponsorship program is the foundation for annual campaign successes.
Successful sponsorship programs are annual programs that take advantage of the needs all of  types of donors.  Our sponsorship program will be at its best when all of our members get involved by sharing their "Rotary Moments" with the people they come in contact with.

What is a "Rotary Moment?"  It is any moment that grabs our heart and makes us want to enthusiastically tell our family friends and business associates why we are active Rotarians.  Typically it involves a service project we've participated in.  Sometimes it is something like polio eradication - especially for Rotarians who are old enough to remember when polio was epidemic in the United States.  We are most effective when talking to potential sponsors if our Rotary experience is shared in a way that is personal, heartfelt and sincere.

In our sponsorship brochure there are several specific ways to direct donations, but we will have the greatest capacity to respond to needs presented to the Mesa West Foundation for funding if the majority of donations are received marked "Undesignated (to be used most needed)."

Allan Cady, said that members have asked him how he was so successful last year, and already this year in securing donations or pledges.  When he reaches out to those he knows have the means to be generous, he spends some time on their existing relationship, catching up on what is happening in their family, their business, and their known hobbies.  Then he moves on to talk about some of the things he is passionate about, ending with the things he enjoys most about his involvement in Rotary.  It frequently results in the person he is talking to indicating that they are impressed with all that Rotary does and admire his involvement.  It is then easy to offer to share a brochure that tells about some things we, as Mesa West Rotarians, specifically do.  Some offer to make a donation on the spot.  Sometimes it is a pleasant surprise after-the-fact to see how much they mail in after looking the brochure over.  Some of his donors are family - others are long-time business associates or friends.  The people who are closest to us are the ones most likely to support what we care about.  CLICK HERE or on the image to download this year's Sponsorship Brochure.

Some ideas of potential donors each of us can reach out to are:  school associates ♦ other professionals ♦ adult friends of our young children ♦ old business associates ♦ people frequently seen ♦ owners of our health club ♦ old neighbors ♦ children's school and PTA ♦ spouse's friends ♦ waiters/waitresses ♦ church associates ♦ cleaning establishments ♦ civic activities ♦ hair/barber salon ♦ insurance agent ♦ previous job ♦ real estate agents ♦ bankers or credit union ♦ doctor ♦ dentist ♦ restaurants ♦ country club ♦ neighbors ♦ relatives ♦ sports/hobbies ♦ accountant.
