Highlights of July 11, 2019 Meeting
President Jim Schmidt opened the first meeting of his year reminding members and guests of the Rotary Vision Statement:  Together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change - across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Because we did not meet on July 4, Jim asked Ray Smith to lead everyone present in singing America the Beautiful.  The invocation was offered by George Wheeler who reminded everyone that Rotary is not political and not religious, then asked everyone to observe a moment of silence reflecting on those in our world who are less fortunate than ourselves.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Dick Myren.

Guests
Lucinda General introduced Past District Governor George Wheeler as an honorable patriot and Rotarian.  Our new President led by example introducing his guest, Jim LeCheminant, as a former member and Past President of the Mesa Baseline Club.  Jim had moved away from Arizona for a while, but now that he is back at Gateway Bank in Mesa and is being actively recruited to be sponsored by our President to come back into Rotary.

Drawings
Robert LaBarge found it paid to attend Rotary when his badge number was drawn in the weekly attendance drawing.  Ron Thompson had purchased the winning ticket in the weekly drawing, so he won the weekly drawing, but his luck did not hold out when he attempted to draw the ace of clubs in an attempt to win the accumulating prize money.

Happy Bucks
Robert LaBarge reported that his dad, Don LaBarge recently had successful surgery to remove 10" from his intestine.  He was recovering nicely in Banner Desert and expected to be home by the weekend.  Don Boucher reported that a friend who he knew as a field training trainee had been diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo a full colonoscopy.  Don was excited to announce he and Sharon were heading to Thousand Oaks to celebrate their grandson's first birthday.  Ed Koeneman was happy to be attending his first meeting after several weeks away for the Rotary International Convention in Germany, moving into a new home, and undergoing knee surgery.  He was also proud to announce it is only 361 days until the next Star Wars movie.  Allan Cady was happy to announce he and Polly will have a guest from Mexico in their home for six weeks.  Valeria is the daughter of friends who they first became acquainted with when Allan and Polly hosted Valeria's family when they were here for the Rotary USA Mexico Friendship Conference in the fall of 2017.  He promised to bring Valeria to a Mesa West meeting.  While she is here, they plan to spend some time with her at a dude ranch.  John Pennypacker was happy to be entrusted with the "brain trust" of transporting four Past District Governors to the DG installation in Sedona Saturday.  Dick Myren contributed his usual happy buck honoring Rod Daniels' tradition of being happy to be a member of Mesa West Rotary.  Dick was also thankful that Jack Rosenberg's recent surgery went well and he is doing fine.  Dick's wife Sandy recently had to have a stent placed in the "widow-maker" artery.  The procedure took place at Mountain Vista, "a great hospital facility."  She is recovering slowly.  Steve Ross contributed $38 to celebrate his and Luin's 38th wedding anniversary on July 4.  Lucinda was happy to have lived through the remodel of a bathroom and other parts of their home.  George Wheeler contributed $3 for each of the "three wonderful ladies" seated at his table.  Ron Thompson contributed for a recent trip to Washington DC where they visited the Smithsonian and the African-American Museum.  He said both were amazing!  Darl Andersen contributed $5 NOT because he was happy to be at the old men's table, but because he was happy at the prospect of welcoming Jim LeCheminant back into Rotary.  President Jim was happy to have recently celebrated his and Rosalyn's 49th wedding anniversary.  John Benedict celebrated a recent trip to Washington DC.  While there, they saw his niece graduate from West Point.  A Jack Rosenberg update included the information that he had a kidney removed.  His cancer is gone.  He has a 15" scar.  All went well, and he is resting at home.

Announcements
  • Allan Cady had an update on the 2018-19 Sponsorship Program.  $54,000 was collected.  55% of Mesa West members participated by either personally contributing or finding one or more contributing sponsors.  There were 89 contributing donors.  Dan Coons Team Ribeye was the top team bringing in $14,000.  The breakdown for the use of the donated funds was:
    • $23,000 Unrestricted
    • $16,800 Hearing
    • $7,200 Aqua Africa
    • $3,700 Youth
    • $1,100 Microcredit
    • $2,200 Various
  • Melodie Jackson asked for volunteers to help Saturday, July 13, with a Stuff the Bus event to gather school supplies.  She hoped volunteers would be willing to help for 1-2 hours at the Walmart located at Stapley and Highway 60.
  • The speaker for the July 18 meeting will be Naomi Sellers.  Naomi is a student at Westwood High School and a member of the Interact Club Mesa West Rotary sponsors there.  She is the daughter of Graem Sellers who presented a program on April 4 discussing his experience as a Rotary scholar in Scotland as a young man.  Naomi was accepted to participate in a Yale Young Global Scholars Program this summer for outstanding high school students.  Financial support for this opportunity was provided by the District 5500 Foundation with a small contribution from Mesa West Rotary.

Program
President Jim began his presentation by explaining the difference between lawyers and accountants.  He explained, "accountants know they are boring."

Jim feels honored to be President of our truly awesome club.  He acknowledged it is somewhat intimidating to be president of a club which is the Rotary home of five living Past District Governors who are all committed to Mesa West and the larger world of Rotary.  They all understand what Rotary International is all about and the difference it can make.

We are a legacy club.  Jim's first goal, "Don't blow it!"  He went back to the way he began the meeting with Rotary's vision statement.  He considers it both impressive and inspiring.  He repeated it a second time:  "Together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change - across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves."

Jim referred to the message featured in the July 3 Messenger with RI President Mark Maloney's action plans.  In the message RIP Maloney reminded readers of Rotary's influence in the formation of the United Nations and our continuing relationship with the UN.  He would like to grow Rotary, expanding our reach through a genuine effort to become more family-friendly and increasing our ability to adapt.

Jim spoke of three key words
  • Connect - reach out and get to know each other, and reach out to get to know others in our community
  • Unite - take action and serve together
  • Change - when we see the difference we make, we will change
The club's board of directors held an all-day strategic planning meeting last spring.  One of the goals was to identify a signature community service project.  In the near future, Jim will hold a Club Assembly where other things discussed at that meeting will be rolled out.

He is proud of what we do in Guaymas, what we plan to do in Sudan, what we help accomplish through microcredit in Hermosillo Mexico, Interact and Youth Exchange.  Through the financial strength provided by the sponsorship team, this year we will leave no hearing aid need behind.  He is impressed by Chris Krueger's passion for the Aqua Africa project and appreciates her willingness to be involved as a Past President in Community Service.  He appreciates Darl Andersen's involvement in and commitment to the microcredit program.

Jim stated that service to the unfortunate is a lifting balm to the recipient and to the one(s) who serve.  Members were encouraged to involve family whenever possible.  As part of our outreach growth, he encouraged members to change up tables occasionally, indicating it would be nice to look out and see two dark-haired individuals seated with four white-haired members.  He encouraged us to truly get to know each other.

At the strategic planning meeting the board decided that once a month, the club should hold an evening meeting to improve ability of some members to attend.  One thing that attracts new members and improves attendance is excellent programs.  Jim appreciates the willingness of Wendell Jones, Lola McClane, Steve Ross and John Pennypacker to serve on the Program team.  Good programs enable us to connect with and broaden our view of our community.

Jim reported that the club is financially healthy.  He thanked Chris for operating the club in a fiscally sound manner during her term as our leader.  He announced the two charitable foundations of Mesa West and Mesa Baseline have been merged with the help of member Steve West who handled the necessary legal paperwork.  The charitable funds raised are held in the newly consolidated foundation.  Jim wants members to see the process of identifying projects, which the club board will approve for recommendation to the board of the charitable foundation for their approval and funding as a transparent process.  There is representative membership of both of the prior foundation boards on the board of directors of the now combined foundation.  The name and taxpayer identification number of the Mesa West Foundation will be used going forward for the consolidated foundation.

Club fundraising donations will go to the Mesa West Foundation.  Dues payments are deposited to the Club Operating Account.  Members are urged to pay their dues on time.  They can pay with credit card at meetings or electronically with a link found on their invoice.  Members were encouraged to sign-up for Rotary Direct to make their donations to The Rotary Foundation.  Rotary Direct is the easiest error-free way to set up your donation to meet the "every member every year" goal of supporting the amazing work of TRF that unites Rotarians throughout the world.  CLICK HERE to sign up for Rotary Direct.  If you don't know your member ID number, look on the label of your Rotarian magazine.  To meet the ideal of $100 per Rotarian per year, you can set-up an automatic donation of $10 a month or $25 a quarter to the annual fund.  You likely won't miss it, but the beneficiaries of your generosity will be forever changed.  No one will complain if you choose to donate more.

Club goals will be board generated with input from club members.  Jim admits he likes to make decisions and move forward.  He likes things "done now and done perfect."  He knows this method of operation can be offensive.  He wants all to know if he does offend, it is not his intention and asks that we please rein him in.  He knows he will have to rely on the efforts of others, and sincerely appreciates those efforts.

Jim asked that Rotarians let him know what they would like to do to serve.  He wants those who are currently serving to be good mentors of future leaders for our club.  He wants us to connect, unite, and take action to create lasting changes.  He asked that we each commit to, not just do what we've done in the past, but do more than is comfortable.  We will all be better for it.  He pointed out Allan and Polly Cady who do a good job of connecting and being ambassadors.  He sees the club as having the capacity to be more impactful and finding greater meaning in our membership.

When asked, Jim admitted this is the beginning of his second term as a Club President.  He served as President of Mesa Baseline in 1994-95.

DG David Simmer Installation in Sedona
Saturday, July 13, nine members of the Mesa West Rotary family travelled to beautiful Sedona, Arizona for the installation of our new District Governor, David Simmer.  Enjoying the getaway were, Allan and Polly Cady, Pam Cohen, Lucinda General, Chris and Mike Krueger, Jeanie Morgan, and John Pennypacker,

Our own Lucinda General was the Past District Governor selected to officiate the swearing-in of David as our District Governor for 2019-20.

A few of those making the trip took advantage of the perfect photo opportunity with DG David's wrapped car in the foreground and beautiful red rock formations in the background.

One of the areas of focus for DG David is utilization of global grant funding to help those in need close to home as well as with projects to meet needs that are often more well-known abroad.  Following the induction, DG David introduced George McGraw of Dig Deep to educate those present about the basic needs for water and electricity he has personally observed in the Navajo Nation. John Pennypacker took a photo of the Rotarian crew who will be supporting the water project Dig Deep is coordinating to bring the life-changing necessities of water and electricity to remote rural homes on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona.  Shown in the bottom right photo are:  Jeff Poynter (Four Peaks RC), Curt Ward (Gilbert RC) John McKoy (Sun Lakes RC),George McGraw (CEO Dig Deep), DG David Simmer, and Gary Whiting (Sun Lakes RC).

July – Start of New Rotary Officers’ Year of Service
Each Year, on July 1, the leadership in Rotary changes.  Mesa West Rotary Club has a new President - Jim Schmidt.  He is the leader we, as members, will know best.  He will be supported by Rosalyn, who has been by his side for over 42 years.

David Simmer is now the District Governor for District 5495.  He has been preparing for this role since he was selected as District Governor Nominee Designate in 2016-17.

Johrita Solari is one of the first two women to serve on the Rotary Board of Directors.  She represents the zone our District is a part of - Zone 26.  Hers is the only two-year position of our new leaders.  To ensure continuity, only half of the directors are new each year.

Mark Daniel Maloney is our new Rotary International President.  Our Past Presidents, Chris Krueger and Ed Koeneman both had the opportunity to hear his remarks at the recent Rotary International Convention in Hamburg, Germany.  He is a member of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama.

New leadership each year keeps Rotary fresh and full of energy.  The core values of our vision, the areas of focus of The Rotary Foundation, and our four-way-test keep Rotary dynamic, focused and ethically sound.

THE FOUR WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do

first  Is it the TRUTH?
second  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
third  Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
fourth Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
