One of our own - Jim Schmidt - District Governor Nominee Designate
image

Message from DG Larry Horton the evening of December 6, 2022:

Jim joined the Mesa Baseline Rotary Club at age 28 and immediately served as Treasurer for several years, chaired all the avenues of service on the Board, and then served as President in 1994-1995. When the club merged into Mesa West in 2015, he assisted in the integration of the Clubs and Foundations and went on to serve as Club president in 2019-2020. He is a graduate of Rotary Leadership Academy and Rotary Leadership Institute. He is passionate about Rotary’s vision and currently serves as Assistant Governor and on the district Finance and Strategic Planning Committees.

Jim recently retired as a renowned tax adviser and business consultant for the public accounting firm of Schmidt Westergard & Company (now Forvis) where he led the firm as the managing partner for over 15 years. He was a respected leader of BKR International, an international association of more than 150 accounting firms in over 80 countries. He has served on the boards of various community organizations including PHX East Valley Partnership, Arizona Chamber of Commerce, Banner Health, and other professional and civic organizations. He also has extensive Church leadership experience.

Jim and his wife Rosalyn have 8 children and 32 grandchildren. They enjoy traveling and meeting good people everywhere, having visited all 50 states and 49 countries and counting. Jim enjoys volleyball, golf, pickleball, hiking, snorkeling and any sport or activity his children or grandchildren are involved in.

The following "Know your Fellow Rotarian" article was published in our Messenger about Jim in January, 2018 - nearly five years ago:

Our Club Treasurer, James A "Jim" Schmidt, was born in Great Falls, Montana.  He was the first of seven children in his family.  He has been an arizona resident for 34 years.

Jim has traveled to 49 foreign countries, but is only fluent in English.  He has travelled to all 50 states in the US, but has only lived in five.

As a teen, Jim dreamed of becoming a doctor.  Instead, he became a Certified Public Accountant - Tax and has served in that profession for 37 years.

Jim has been married to Rosalyn for 40 years.  They have eight children (six sons and two daughters.  So far, they have twenty-two grandchildren, but have not yet had their first great-grandchild.

Jim had a difficult time choosing a single best vacation as there are too many good ones in his memory.  His favorite family vacations are cruises around the Hawaiian Islands and Alaska, and every summer in Coronado, California.  His most romantic vacation memories were of leaf-changing trips to New England, France, England, Germany and Switzerland... he likes the "shoulder season" when the leaves turn in October.  For historical vacations, he has enjoyed Rome, Florence and the rest of Italy.  For relaxation, he remembers their first two-week cruise in the Carribean from the Bahamas to Trinidad.  For outdoor adventure, he favors Machu Picchu, Peru and South Island of New Zealand.

Jim's most rewarding volunteer experience was his service as a missionary for two years in Australia.

Congratulations, Jim!  We are proud of you!!!

  • Eagle Scout Owen Crandall led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Ace of Clubs Raffle - Dick Myren

Dick Myren asked Jim McGown to draw the winning raffle ticket to win the weekly pot of $25.  Should the Ace of Clubs be drawn, the lucky winner would win an additional $50.  Jim Erickson was the holder of the stub of the ticket drawn.  When he attempted to draw the Ace of Clubs, the card he drew was the Four of Spades.

Introduction of Guests

  • Polly Cady introduced Anita Kegler as the operator of an equity company and a long-time volunteer with the Red Cross.
  • Don LaBarge introduced Owen Crandall.
  • Don then introduced Scoutmaster Rick Cannon and Owen's mother, Laura Crandall.
Happy Bucks - Don LaBarge

  • Pam Cohen - During the month of December - unless otherwise specified - Happy Bucks will go to the Salvation Army.

  • Colleen Coons contributed complimenting Polly Cady for the great job she did managing Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) on November 19 in Laughlin.
  • Bryan Goetzenberger was happy to contribute $20 to support the cause.
  • Polly Cady thanked Colleen for the RLI compliment.  She was also happy to have Anita and Owen at the meeting and especially happy about the week they just spent in Cabo.

  • Ted Williams said he has six sons and two daughters.  A son-in-law has been on dialysis for some time, waiting for a kidney and pancreas transplant.  They had a call recently that got their hopes up, but the organs were not viable.  On Thanksgiving about 11:00 they got a call, and he now has a new kidney and pancreas and everything is working as it should.  He pledged $100 to be used any way the club wants to use it.
  • Rick Cannon was glad Owen achieved the rank of Eagle, and glad he was going to ring the bell at Bass Pro.
  • Owen Crandall was glad to be at the meeting and glad he made Eagle.
  • Don LaBarge contributed $5 admitting he made two mistakes.  Both the size of the contribution and the admission were notable.
  • Pam contributed as Happy Bucks wrapped up.  She had spent Thanksgiving weekend in Flagstaff and enjoyed seeing her 2 1/2 year-old grandson riding his little bike.
Eagle Scout Project Report - Owen Crandall

Owen was very glad his Eagle Scout project was a success.  A local contractor supplied most of the materials needed to assemble the artificial fish habitats that he was told were very much needed at the urban fishing ponds throughout the community.  Owen taught the younger scouts how to make them.  They were delivered to and handed off to the park ranger, and were not involved in the actual installation into the ponds.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Club Administration - Shelly Romine

The most noticeable aspect of Shelly's job is that of being the "party planner" for the club.  On June 29, the club will be celebrating our 50th anniversary.  A planning kickoff took place Monday, November 28.  It will be a People of Action dinner.  It is hoped that the anniversary celebration will kick off an annual celebration  honoring a Rotarian as well as a member of the community at large.  Shelly asked that anyone with experience of getting nominations from the community should volunteer to be involved help.  She is particularly looking for a nomination form.  There will be lots of jobs both large and small and she encouraged everyone to say "yes" if asked to help.
She will be gathering as much historical information as possible.  For those members who have been around a long time, it's time to go through those boxes and see what kind of historical Mesa West treasures can be found.

She is also working on the post-holiday celebration ith details to come.

December 29 is a 5th Thursday.  We will gather at a local establishment for social hour that evening.  Location to be announced.

International Service - Ray Smith

Six members of Mesa West recently participated with 25 students and doctors in our first Gift of Hearing mission at a school for the deaf in Guaymas, Mexico.  Participating Mesa West members were:  Bob Jensen, Chuck Flint, Polo Santiago, Jim Schmidt, Ray Smith, and Erica Williams.

A detailed report will be presented early in 2023 at a club meeting.

Vocational Service - Bryan Goetzenberger

The Rotary Vocational Service Fund of Arizona is a 501(c)(3) non profit.  It is a multi-district Rotary project in the State of Arizona.  It is a Qualifying Charitable Organization enabling individual donors who are Arizona residents to get up to $400 dollar-for-dollar credit offsetting their state income tax obligation, and married couples filing jointly to get up to $800 tax credit..  TRVFA provides grants to fund vocational education to enable the beneficiaries to get to the next level of a living wage.

Bryan has had the opportunity to interview several candidates to help them climb the ladder and simply needed help to do so.

Fundraising Chair - Allan Cady

The Sponsor Program idea actually came from Past President John Eagleston.  In the four years Allan has run the campaign they have raised an average of $50,000 each year.  The fortunate thing is that 80% of club members have participated with donations, but 34% of the total funds raised have come from sources outside of our club.

We've had some fun with it in the past with the team captains creating team names.  One year we had a steak and beans competition.  He hopes to have a like incentive this year when the campaign is kicked off in January.

Allan will be presenting a program in January on giving.  It will include the sponsor program, and TRVFA.

Ed Koeneman - Youth Services

If we want Rotary to thrive in the future, we need to train our replacements.  We sponsor a high school Interact club at Westwood High School in Mesa.  Their goal was to meet twice a month, but so far, they haven't missed a week.  Members helped Mesa West volunteers on Veterans Day by distributing water and flags at the parade.  The club officers each also serve as Assistant Governors on the Interact District Council.

Each year, two RYLA camps are held - one in October and one in January.  In October, Westwood HS Interact had fifteen delegates at RYLA.  The camps provide leadership training.

We also sponsor a Rotaract Club at Grand Canyon University.

We are also involved with Rotary Youth Exchange.  Our inbound student this year is Fanny Leinard from France.  She is attending Campo Verde High School.  Our outbound student this year is Jaylee Alvin, who is spending her year in Spain.  She is loving her host family and school.  The students benefit from being immersed in another culture and learn to be fabulous ambassadors.

Program Chair - Jay Stuckey

Jay is responsible for booking speakers for our club meetings.  He has openings in February through June and encouraged members who had ideas about speakers who could provide awesome programs to get in touch with him.

Community Service - Dave Brauchler

Our most recent hands-on community service project was November 19 at Midwest Food Bank where volunteers packaged Frosted Flakes into individual serving-size bags.  He has tried to have a service project each month.  With our holiday bell-ringing responsibility, he is taking a project planning break in December.

He is open to ideas for spring projects.  In April we will be participating in a district-wide bunk-bed build for Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

Visioning Chair - Logan Harper

We are at the point in the visioning project where we are working on what steps now need to be taken as action plans are developing.  He gave a report on the recent survey to determine our visioning motto.  He said 33 members responded.  He said it was close, but a clear majority did favor the motto:

Transforming Communities, Creating Opportunities, Impacting Youth

Public Image - Sean Green

Sean said they are working on ideas for better using social media to bring attention to what Mesa West does.  Our current methods do a good job of reaching Rotarians, but the greater community could be reached with expanded usage of social media.  More to come...

Membership Chair - Polly Cady

We have brought in 5 new members since July 1 - Polo Santiago, Gabby Turner, Gina and Mike Schroeder, and Debbie Koeneman.  We have lost two members.  Jim Le Cheminant had to resign because of conflicting commitments.  Dan Coons  transferred to another club.  We currently have 67 active members and 4 honorary members.  The club is growing, we are up 3 for the year so far.  Pam inserted that she wants to beat Dan Coons' record of bringing in 12 members in one year.

John Pennypacker - Foundation Chair - TRF Giving

John offered to help anyone set up their My Rotary account and establish automatic giving to support The Rotary Foundation through the Annual Fund as well as PolioPlus.

Our club's annual giving goal for the Annual fund is $15,000.  Year to date, we are at $7,450 with 53% of current members participating.  Our club's all-time giving if $485,915.

Our Mesa West PolioPlus goal for this year is $10,000.  To date we have given $2,040, with only 29% of our members haven given this year to date.

It is known that giving increases with participation in "My Rotary" accounts.  In Rotary District 595, 47% of members have My Rotary accounts.  In Mesa West, 73% of our members have set up their My Rotary account.  We need to convince the other 27% to do so.

In other areas of giving that Mesa West Rotary Members ideally should support, John reported that 33% of our members have already contributed $7,147 to Mesa West Rotary Foundation this year with 33% of our members represented in that giving.  17% of Mesa West Rotary Club members have given a total of $3,540 to The Rotary Vocational Fund of Arizona since July 1.

Mesa West Rotary Foundation Update - Jim Schmidt, President

At the end of the last fiscal year, our club's foundation had $232,974.84 in total assets. About half of that is restricted to the Guaymas Hearing Project for a period of time.  Sponsors contributing to the foundation pay for our charitable service.  The $58,200 spending budget approved for this fiscal year includes:

$13.500 for Community Service
$16,500 for International Service (this includes $12,000 budgeted for the recent Guaymas hearing mission)
$5,000 for Vocational Service - to be donated to The Rotary Vocational Fund of Arizona
$23,200 for Youth Service (includes $12,000 budgeted specifically for scholarships)

During the prior fiscal year, $70,000 was transferred from the Mesa West Rotary Foundation to the District for them to manage the Aqua Africa Global Grant under the supervision of the District Foundation Committee.

Mesa West Rotary Club and Mesa West Rotary Foundation are two separate legal entities with separate boards.  The foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit.  The board of trustees of the foundation must be approved by the Mesa West Rotary Club Board of Directors.

Club Treasurer - Dick Myren

Dick had statements reviewed at the most recent board meeting on the table for interested members to look at in detail.  He provided some highlights.  He said we are operating on target.  The dues structure the club has adopted is working.  He thanked Jeanie Morgan for her work on the budget and dues structure.  The bottom line - we are in good shape financially

SAVE THE DATE!  You won't want to miss this celebration!
The Big Four - Ways to Support Rotary in Mesa West
As Rotarians, we are regularly exposed to opportunities to support various causes with our time, talent and treasure.  Sometimes it is hard to sift through all the information and decide where we are going to use our available financial resources.

It would be wonderful if every Arizona Rotarian would make the following BIG FOUR their Rotary charities of choice and support every one of them every year, we could make a bigger difference than we are making today.
  1. The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Annual Fund - The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world."  Giving a small amount each month adds up.  CLICK HERE to download a form you can use to sign up for Rotary Direct, electing "Annual Fund - Share" for your recurring donation.
  2. The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Polio Plus - Rotary's commitment to eradicate polio is so well known and respected that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matches donations $2 for $1.  To take advantage of this opportunity to multiply the effect of your giving, CLICK HERE and download a second Rotary Direct form, this time electing electing "Polio Eradication" for your recurring donations.  Those who donate $100 or more annually to Polio Plus qualify in District 5495 as Polio Plus Society Members.  If you would like to make that commitment, CLICK HERE to download the commitment form.
  3. The Rotary Vocational Fund of Arizona (TRVFA) provides vocational education grants to Arizona Residents who meet specific low-income guidelines.   The grants enable the recipients to lift themselves out of poverty, benefitting themselves, their families and the economy of our state.  TRVFA is a 501(c)(3) charity.  They also are a Qualifying Charitable Organization for Arizona Tax Credit Donations.  Their QCO Code is 20698.  Many Arizona Rotarians say giving to TRVFA is a "no brainer."  If you can help someone lift themselves out of poverty and it won't end up costing you anything why would you not do it?  Mesa West Rotary has the highest number of members who have signed up for automated monthly recurring donations by electing that option on the "Donate Now" button on the TRVFA website.  Click the image to learn more or CLICK HERE to DONATE NOW.
  4. Mesa West Rotary Foundation, Inc. is the funding and fundraising arm of our own Mesa West Rotary Club.  It is a 501(c)(3) charity.  We have had successful sponsorship campaigns the last few years enabling us to spend our energy on service rather than on holding fundraising events.  Charitable grants that we get involved with are funded through our charitable foundation, Our signature Gift of Hearing Project in Guaymas Mexico is funded through this foundation.  Scholarships are awarded annually to Westwood High School Students (the high school where Mesa West Rotary sponsors an Interact Club).  Funds are used to support a variety of activities in four of the Rotary Avenues of Service:
    1. Community Service
    2. International Service
    3. Vocational Service
    4. Youth Service
The process isn't quite automated at this point in time, but we hope it soon will be.  For now, you can email our executive secretary who can help you work out a recurring donation plan should you wish to make that arrangement to support our own club's charitable activity.

THE FOUR WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do

first  Is it the TRUTH?
second  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
third  Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
fourth Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
