President Kayla Mudge opened the meeting, Jack Rosenberg led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Dick Myren gave an invocation.
For today’s raffle, the winner of the small pot was Jay Pennypacker (John’s son). However, he did not draw the Ace of clubs, so the big pot carries over.
The February Mesa West Rotarian of the month was named as Eric Silverberg!

Connie Bunyard facilitated the introduction of guests who included Hilary Carpenter, Cecilia Johnson, Misty Birks (Captain John’s wife), and Jay Pennypacker.
Next, John Bunyard collected Happy Bucks:
- Deb Koeneman was happy that she is going to Georgia to see her son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter
- Harry Grossman was happy that his daughter received the faculty award for her work in sustainable agriculture
- Dick Myren was happy to be back after his medical issues and contributed for himself and Rod Daniels
- Eric Silverberg was happy for CPR and encouraged all to take CPR training
- Captain John Birks was happy that his wedding anniversary is on the 8th and he was happy to become an official club member
- Pam was happy that Captain John Birks will be inducted today
- Jim McGowen was happy that he was able to get two wheelchairs and some other valuable items in an online auction
- Colleen Coons was happy that Ed helped her learn to set-up, run, and troubleshoot the projector
- Ron Thompson was happy to contribute to his Paul Harris
- John Pennypacker was happy for his health (was in the hospital the other day) and that his son was here today
- Jay Pennypacker was happy that Pam took John to the hospital
- Ed Koeneman was happy that Dick was back and that the RYE students enjoyed the Lost Dutchman Days carnival and rodeo
- Warren Williamson was happy to tell his weekly joke
After Happy Bucks, Captain John Birks was inducted into the club and his wife, Misty, pinned him. Also, here is a picture of their daughter and granddaughter.
Next, Connie Bunyard auctioned off a bag of goodies put together by Melody Jackson during her recent travels. Blaise Vitale won the auction and the money will go to Melody’s Sponsorship team.
Announcements of upcoming events:
- Sat Mar 7 – CLA at Paradise Valley Community College or by Zoom
- Sat Mar 21 – the club will sponsor 10 Mesa students to attend the Mesa Aspire Leadership Program; volunteers are needed to make/serve meals that day
- April 4 – Spring Olympics
- May 1-2 - the District Conference, hotel blocks are closing soon and there are volunteer opportunities on the afternoon of May 1st
The speaker today was Dr. Kristin Bishop, a naturopathic doctor who runs Keystone Natural Family Medicine in Tempe, AZ. She discussed the benefits of bypassing the medical insurance maze and having better face-time with clinicians by utilizing direct primary care.
