Past President and DGN Colleen Coons filled in for President Kayla Mudge today. Pam Cohen led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Dick Myren gave an Invocation.
Guests today included Hilary Carpenter, who is a nurse practitioner doing a clinical rotation with Frank Rosenberg. She is interested in going on the Guaymas Hearing project trip this year. Our AG Jackie Wasick was also in attendance today and shared that an RLI session is coming up on November 8th, and the District is hosting a tailgating event at the December 7th Cardinals game.
Melodie Jackson won today’s raffle but did not draw the Ace of Clubs, so the pot keeps growing. The club acknowledged birthdays for Jim Schmidt and Warren Williamson. Next, Eric Silverberg was presented with a Paul Harris plus 2. Announcements of upcoming events included the Guaymas Hearing project trip. Erica Williams said that they still need a couple of volunteers to be runners and donations to help feed participants. Please see last week’s Messenger or email her at ejw@asu.edu. Also, the Mesa PD drive-thru trick-or-treating is on October 30th, and the Life Skills program is on November 1st.

- Dick Myren was happy to donate for himself and Rod Daniels, but also not happy that he had a $1000 veterinarian bill recently
- Chad Reid was happy that he had a productive trip to New Mexico for Toastmasters
- Machel Considine was happy to be here today, in between road trips
- Pam Cohen contributed as she was happy to be here after missing 3 meetings in a row
- Brian Harvey is back in town for the Winter, and was happy to be here
- Jeanie Morgan was also happy to be back in Arizona, and that many club members have paid their quarterly dues already!
- John Pennypacker was happy to donate to the Guaymas Hearing project
- Ed Koeneman was happy that he had been in Mesa West for 15 years as of this week!
- Colleen Coons was happy for the McKinney Vento kick-off
- Jim McGown was happy to donate on behalf of his declining memory!
- Warren Williamson was happy to tell his weekly joke, and he donated to sponsor an audiology student for the Guaymas Hearing project!
Today’s speaker was Abe Feder, who told the club about the Arizona Rotary Microcredit Program. He noted that money invested in microcredit is one of the most successful investments to eradicate poverty anywhere in the world. The Arizona microcredit program partners with a local microcredit bank to make small business loans to groups of 4 to 8 individuals with synergistic businesses who all co-sign a promissory note pledging to repay all the individual loans. New loans are available after initial loans have been repaid. This program is extremely successful in improving communities, individual living conditions, and small businesses.
Abe shared several individual success stories from people who have been through several loan cycles and showed how the business profits grew with the amount borrowed over time.
