Mesa West Spring Olympics
The annual Mesa West Spring Olympics was held Saturday evening April 27 at the home of John and Jane Benedict in Tempe.  Following a presentation of the US Flag by the state champion Gilbert Tigers basketball team and a delicious meal catered by Smokin' Hot BBQ, the games began.

The Gilbert High School Basketball team members served as scorekeepers and referees at each of the ten events, keeping the games honest.

After the games were finished and the score sheets were tallied, it was interesting that none of the top three female participants were present to be honored with their medallions:

Gold - Susan Williams
Silver - Polly Cady
Bronze - Aubrey Luma

The top three male athletes were:
Gold - Caio Luque Garcia
Silver - Chuck Flint
Bronze - Bob Zarling

The winning teams were:
Gold - Caio Luque Garcia and Sammy Rosenberg
Silver - Susan and Ted Williams
Bronze - Tom Bradford and Bob Zarling

It was unfortunate, with our Rotary Youth Exchange Student Caio taking top honors in two categories, that the Ecuador flag and national anthem were not readily available to be displayed and played as he received his medals.  He was, however, honored with a birthday cake on the eve of his 18th birthday.  He had considerable difficulty blowing out the candles so his wish would come true.  If he didn't know about trick birthday candles before he came to visit Mesa West Rotary, he certainly does now!

Following the award ceremony, Chris Krueger presented a check from Mesa West for $500 to the basketball team to be used to help pay for championship rings for the team members.

The hospitality enjoyed by all at the Benedict home was outstanding.  The spirits of everyone present were dampened when it was announced that paramedics had arrived to take care of Jane after she fell and hit her head hard enough to cause bleeding.  She was taken to Banner Desert Hospital where she spent a couple of nights being observed.  We are pleased to report Jane was released Monday to enjoy some rest and recuperation in the comfort of their beautiful home.  We are thankful for the hospitality we all enjoyed, but much more thankful to know Jane is safe at home.

Mesa West Rotarians at CLA
Mesa West Rotary and Westwood High School Interact Clubs were well represented at the Rotary District 5495 Club Leadership Academy held Saturday, April 27 at the Black Canyon Conference Center located on the Ottawa University Campus in Phoenix.

Wayne General was the official event photographer.  Sandra Franco, a Westwood HS Interactor, attended seminar classes when she was not mixing and mingling to promote support of the Crutches for Africa mobility mission to Kenya this summer.  Sandra has been selected to be one of the Ambassadors this year.  Not shown is Hannah Mason, also from Westwood HS Interact, who was also chosen to be an Ambassador.  Chris Krueger facilitated a session, Jim Schmidt was actively soaking up knowledge preparing for his role as Mesa West President 2019-20.

Darl Andersen was busy during breaks enticing interest in the microcredit program in Mexico.  Donna Goetzenberger kicked off the Academy with a flag presentation ceremony.  As the flags were presented, Donna announced the names of the countries and youth involved in 2017-18, 2018-19, and 2019-20 planned youth exchanges.  Allan Cady was a diligent student preparing for his new District role as an Assistant Governor in 2019-20.  Jeanie Morgan served as a facilitator.

Colton Cagle, Interact District Governor and Westwood High School Interactor was featured during one of the general sessions telling about the impact Rotary Youth Programs has made in his life.  He has attended RYLA, been an active Interactor, served as President of his club one year, and went to Kenya as a C4A Ambassador in 2018.  Colton will be an outbound exchange student this coming Rotary year.

Johrita Solari, who will become a Director of Rotary International July 1 representing Zone 26 is shown visiting with Lucinda General and Polly Cady at the event.  Polly and Allan Cady served as aides to Johrita during her trip to Arizona for the Academy.

If you want to know more about Rotary beyond our club, and would enjoy interacting with people who are passionate about doing good in the world, you might want to hold the last Saturday in April 2020 open for the next Club Leadership Academy!

Time to Respond to No Ball Ball Invitation
Our sponsorship program for this Rotary Year is drawing to a close.  If you've not yet solicited a sponsor or contributed to the campaign, now is the time.  For the past two years, our club has elected to solicit sponsorship donations from members and their networks rather than invest the time it takes to plan and carry out a major fundraising event.  For fun, and to remind members to not let their sponsorship campaign team down by failing to respond, invitations were sent to members to the "No Ball Ball" steak and beans event which will be hosted Saturday, May 11, at the home of President Chris Krueger.  The invitation contained a computation page and an RSVP card.  If you've not yet computed what your contribution should be or sent your RSVP, CLICK HERE to download a copy of the key invitation, computation and RSVP elements.  You can send an e-mail to Aubrey with a commitment to be billed for your contribution as well as let her know if you plan to attend.

THE FOUR WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do

first  Is it the TRUTH?
second  Is it FAIR to all concerned?
third  Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
fourth Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
