President Elect Connie Bunyard filled in for President Kayla Mudge today.  Today was National Smarties® Day
Warren Williamson led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Dick Myren gave the Invocation. Next, guests were introduced, including:
  • Warren Haussler, a past member of Mesa West
  • Soraya Movassaghi, President of Phoenix Rotaract Club, & past RYLA/Interact
  • Jim McGown (current member, but we welcomed him back to Arizona)
Today’s raffle was won by Chad Reid, who held the winning ticket. He did not draw the Ace of Clubs.
 
Many Happy Bucks were collected:
  • Jim McGown was happy to have made it back to Arizona after 39.5 hours of driving and one flat tire
  • Chad Reid was happy to donate his raffle winnings to Polio Plus, and he announced that he has joined a second local theatre troop
  • Allan Cady was happy to have had his 80th birthday and pledged $80 to the sponsor program
  • John Pennypacker was happy to brag about his grandson’s golf game
  • Ed Koeneman was happy that he would be welcoming his first granddaughter in January
  • Dick Myren was happy to donate for himself and Rod Daniels
  • Harry Grossman was sad that his condo suffered water damage due to last week’s rain
  • Connie Bunyard was happy to find out that they can build many more structures on their “up north” property than anticipated
  • Lucinda General was happy to pass along advice to write down emergency contact phone numbers so they are not just stored in your phone
  • Liz Paulus was happy that a former College Bound mentee has now donated scholarship money to College Bound
Today’s speaker was Dennis Rogers, Past President of the Rotary Club of Tempe South. He spoke to the club about his upcoming charity which will teach students how to plant, cultivate, harvest, and process Moringa. Moringa trees have highly nutritious leaves, seeds, bark, and other parts. They are native to parts of Africa and Asia but grow well in hot, dry conditions like Arizona. Another goal of the charity would be to donate Moringa products to soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and other charities.

Dennis also announced that he is helping the District to sell Iron Lung Lager (beer) to raise money for PolioPlus. $20 per six pack or case for $80.
 
Connie then announced upcoming club events and encouraged all spread the word regarding Mesa West Life Skills on November 1st. Then John Bunyard up shared that he is riding the Tour de Tucson this year and will be raising money for Rotary International’s Polio eradication program. Club members were asked to sponsor his ride; a link to the donation page will be sent out when it becomes available. John Pennypacker then pledged to donate  $100 to the cause.
